Official sources · Every number dated
Thinking about retiring in Portugal, Spain, Italy or France?
Retire in Europe with Claire is a YouTube channel of documentaries for Americans over 60 who are weighing a retirement in Europe. Each video takes one question, such as what a retirement visa asks for, what rent costs or how far the flights home are, and answers it from the official pages and data.
Every source is named, and every number carries the date we checked it. We report what the sources say; the decision stays yours.

The Italy Visa Checklist
For Italy's elective residence visa: find the Italian office in the U.S. that serves your state, then tick off what that office's own page asks for, from proof of income to a home in Italy and the fee. It takes about 10 minutes.
In the works: a guide to southern Italy
We are writing a step-by-step PDF guide for Americans who plan to retire to southern Italy on the elective residence visa: the official steps in order, from your U.S. consulate's checklist to your residence permit and your first year in Italy, each with its office, its deadline and a dated source. It is not for sale yet. The free checklist above covers the first step.
How we work
- Official sources first. Every figure comes from a government page, a consulate, an official statistics office or the organization that publishes the data, and we say which.
- Every number is dated. Each video has its own sources page: every figure, the page it comes from, and the date we checked it.
- Facts, not advice. We don't tell you what to do with your money, taxes or health, and we can't tell you whether you will get a visa.
- Independent. Retire in Europe with Claire is an independent publisher. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by any government, consulate or embassy, and we don't sell visas, property or insurance.
- Corrections. If a figure has changed, tell us. We will check it against the official page and correct it.
Sources for every video
Each video has a sources page with every figure it mentions, the official page behind it and the date we checked it. The link is in the video's description.
